Ketamine infusions aim to reduce pain and sensitivity to analgesia, resulting in a decreased need for pain management medications.

The ketamine is delivered subcutaneously through a small plastic butterfly needle placed in the skin of your abdomen. Initially, the dose is started very low and gradually increases based on your doctor’s review every 24 to 48 hours until the desired pain relief is achieved. If you have had a ketamine infusion before, your dose will be determined based on your previous results with the therapy. Throughout the infusion, your vital signs and pain levels will be regularly monitored by the nurses on the ward.

Ketamine infusions are administered in the hospital and typically last for about 7 to 10 days, though the exact duration depends on individual response to treatment.

During the ketamine infusion, you can move freely and perform daily activities, such as getting dressed and walking around, similar to what you would do at home. However, it is essential not to leave the ward unattended while on the ketamine infusion. The medical staff encourages staying active by walking around the ward and engaging in regular activities like reading, puzzles, games, or any hobbies to keep you entertained during your hospital stay.

During the ketamine infusion, you might experience some redness or irritation at the infusion site. If this occurs, please inform the nurses on the ward so they can replace and reposition the small plastic butterfly needle as needed. In the event of drowsiness or shortness of breath, it is essential to immediately notify your nurses. After being discharged from the hospital, please contact Sydney Pain Management Centre to schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor.
